New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clarke is famous for her championship of the arts but could she be hiding a secret obsession? At the September 2005 opening of the Wearable Art Awards Show in Wellington a parade of exotic creations including Medieval Nuns, a Greek snow goddess and a multi armed Garnesha competed for the coveted Supreme Award. An Elvis impersonator from Las Vegas sang a medley of songs for the bizarre bras section which ended with a film of the real Elvis wearing a leather jacket strangely resembling the one worn by the Prime Minister. Commenting on the show Helen Clarke stated "I've run out of adjectives for what I've seen tonight. These are as good as any of the six shows I've seen before." After complimenting the technical and production crews, models, dancers, musicians and even the city of Wellington for holding the event she concluded that she had particularly enjoyed the "Elvis all the way from Las Vegas". ©Jen Longshaw 2001-2006 Please do not copy in any manner, print or electronic, without permission from the author.
