John Cleese has long been known for his cutting wit on subjects as varied as Spanish waiters to dead parrots. However now the star of Fawlty Towers, Monty Python and A Fish Named Wanda is heaping insults on the city of Palmerston North and Manawatu residents are not amused. Touring New Zealand late 2005 with his one man show “My Life, Times and Current Medical Problems” Cleese gave glowing reviews to all the other centres he visited including Art Deco centre Napier which he described as a “fabulous little place”. Although at the time of his visit he spoke warmly of the Regent Theatre in Palmerston North later he described it as being a “nasty shape”. With complaints about the weather and motel he reserved his biggest criticism for the audience at his sold out show. Saying “they were very strange to play to” he elaborated that “they laughed in the wrong places and when we were expecting big laughs they didn’t laugh, and then they’d laugh at something we didn’t think was funny”. Looking back on his visit to the Manawatu town he remembers “we had a thoroughly, bloody miserable time there and we were so happy to get out”. On his website http://www.thejohncleese.com he states that Palmerston North should be renamed “suicide capital of New Zealand” as “if you wish to kill yourself but lack the courage to, I think a visit to Palmerston North will do the trick”.
