The Top Ten New Zealand Songs of All Time
by Jen Longshaw

Neil Finn CD

Neil Finn and Dave Dobbyn are perhaps the most well-known Kiwi composers but who else made the Kiwi top ten?

The popular music scene in New Zealand has expanded internationally in the past thirty years with the names of "Crowded House" and "Split Enz" as well known overseas as in the land of their origin. Neil Finn and Dave Dobbyn are now regarded as premier song writers with their respective compositions "Four Seasons in One Day", "If You Go Can I Come Too" and "Loyal" hitting the charts worldwide.

At the "Silver Scroll Awards" held in New Zealand in October 2001 the top ten Kiwi songs of the last seventy-five years were named. Not surprisingly these two composers were included in the list but surprisingly the number one song was a controversial choice. "Nature" by Wayne Mason was released in 1969 and its catchy chorus captured the imagination of the record buying public of the time. Mason wrote the song while sitting on his girlfriend's front porch in Lower Hutt and said the composition came quickly. As for the chorus of "da da da da da da da da da da da nature enter me" he explained that he tried to write other words to the melody but nothing seemed right and in explanation as to how he managed to write it in half an hour he theorised "I was in love!"

More recent songs such as Bic Runga's "Sway" made a showing but strangely it was the omissions to the list that caused most comment. "I Hope I Never" by Split Enz didn't make the premier list and the group only had one song in the top 10. There was also some surprise that Neil Finn made just one appearance and then only reached the number two position. Perhaps not surprising though were the tunes that didn't make the grade including such melodical treasures as Fred Dagg's "We Don't Know How Lucky We Are" and Hogsnort Rupert's "Aunty Alice Gave Us This".
